Two works depicting ancient monuments and historical buildings in Rome. They include the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Castel Sant’Angelo and St Peter’s Basilica. Drawn and engraved by Domenico Amici (1808–1871).

Description: 2 works bound in 1 volume. Contemporary calf backed over red and black marbled paper covered boards, gilt titles and decoration to spine. Obl. folio: 29 × 42 cm; unpag. [1], [40]pls.; [1], [20]pls.; [1]pl. (61 plates in all, printed on rectos only, incl. etched titles).

Inserted: Bound in are a view of the reconstructed Forum, engraved by Parboni and Acquaroni after Cockerell, entitled Antico Foro Romano, and the two title pages of the two volumes originally published as brochures.

Condition: The binding with minor abrasions and marks of usage. Contents with occasional minor blemish but generally clean.

Notes: Although both works are dated 1839, the Obelischi contains 5 plates dated 1840. Rossetti mentions an edition entitled Raccolta di trenta vedute degli obelischi, scelte fontane e chiostri di Roma (Rossetti 365). This edition of the Obelischi is probably an early version with only 20 plates, which does not yet correspond to the later edition with 30 plates. The different title Obelischi pubbliche fontane e chiostri della città di Roma may explain this.
